Beginner quilters get sold stitch counts. What decides whether quilting is enjoyable is the opening, the speed and whether the feed dogs drop.

The short answer

The Brother PQ1600S, on one condition: you keep whatever machine you already own.

Brother publishes 8.7 x 5.7 in of needle-to-arm space and 1,500 stitches per minute, plus an extension table at 11.1 x 23.3 in and a knee lifter in the box. It is the least expensive machine at this level with a live Amazon listing, and against the more expensive Juki TL-2010Q it gives up 0.3 in of height and an automatic thread trimmer - a convenience you will not miss until you are quilting a lot.

The condition matters: it is straight stitch only. If it has to be your only machine, buy the Janome MC6700P instead and accept the smaller opening.

The specification beginners get sold, and the one that matters

Machines aimed at new quilters are marketed on built-in stitch count. The Janome MC6700P publishes 200; the Brother NQ3550W publishes 291. Those are real numbers and they are almost irrelevant to quilting.

A quilt uses a straight stitch for piecing and a straight stitch for quilting. Occasionally a zigzag for a binding finish. The other 190-odd stitches are for garment sewing and decorative work.

What actually decides whether quilting is pleasant:

Throat opening, measured in both dimensions. Not the advertised width alone.
Maximum speed, because in free motion it sets your stitch length range.
Whether the feed dogs drop properly rather than being covered by a plate.

Where a beginner's money is best spent

Between a machine with 200 stitches and 47.4 sq in of opening (Janome MC6700P) and one with 1 stitch and 49.6 sq in (Brother PQ1600S), the Brother gives you 5% more opening and 25% more speed.

The Janome gives you 199 more stitches, of which quilting uses perhaps one.

If you already own a machine that zigzags, this is not a close decision. If you do not, the Janome is the right buy and the opening trade is worth making to avoid owning two machines on day one.

What a beginner does not need

A longarm. Different category, dealer-only, needs a room. Real costs and dealer figures are on the longarm cost page.
Embroidery. A combination machine costs you throat opening - the NQ3550W is 34 sq in against the Juki’s 51 - and quilt labels are the only quilting job embroidery does.
A very large stitch library. See above.

What a beginner does need, that is not the machine

A walking foot for straight-line quilting, a free-motion foot for everything else, a large flat surface so the quilt is supported, a quarter-inch foot for piecing, and quilting gloves. Together those cost a fraction of the machine and make more difference to the first quilt than the choice between any two machines on this page.

Skip the TL-2010Q as a first quilting machine unless the trimmer matters to you now

It is a better machine and it wins our main quilting roundup. Against the PQ1600S it adds 0.3 in of height and an automatic thread trimmer, and the trimmer earns its keep on free-motion quilting with hundreds of stops - work you probably will not be doing on your first two quilts.

Buy the cheaper one, spend the difference on a proper table and feet, and upgrade later if the trimmer starts to matter. That order gets you a better first quilt.

Before you buy anything

Check whether the machine you already own can do this. A lot of domestic machines free-motion quilt perfectly well up to about a twin size, and the honest answer to “do I need a new machine?” is sometimes no. 8.5 in wide by 6 in high of arm space, straight stitch only, at 1,500 stitches per minute. Six inches of usable height is the number to notice: it is the most vertical room of any domestic machine in this comparison, and height is what a rolled quilt actually consumes.

The arithmetic

8.5 x 6 in is 51 sq in of throat opening. A 10 x 4.7 in machine is 47 sq in: wider, but smaller.

Throat width gets quoted and throat height does not, which is how a 10 in machine ends up sounding roomier than an 8.5 in one. 8.5 x 6 = 51 sq in. 10.04 x 4.72 = 47.4 sq in. The Juki has 8% more opening despite being 15% narrower, because a rolled quilt is a cylinder and a cylinder needs height.

The Janome MC6700P if it has to be your only machine, because it also does 200 stitches.

Why is the Juki TL-2000Qi no longer the top pick?

Its Amazon listing became currently unavailable in September 2026 and we could find no other live Amazon listing for it, so there is no buy link we can honestly give you. The machine has not been discontinued: Juki still lists it with the same specifications, and authorized Juki dealers still sell it. Bought from a dealer, it remains an excellent first quilting machine.

Do beginners need a machine with lots of stitches?

No. A quilt uses a straight stitch for piecing and a straight stitch for quilting, plus occasionally a zigzag for binding. Stitch count is the most marketed and least relevant specification in this category.

Can I quilt on a basic sewing machine?

Up to about a twin size, usually yes, provided the feed dogs drop and a free-motion foot is available. What limits you is throat opening, because half the quilt has to roll up and pass through it.

What accessories does a beginner quilter need?

A walking foot, a free-motion foot, a quarter-inch piecing foot, a large supporting surface and quilting gloves. Together they cost far less than the machine and make more difference to a first quilt than the machine choice does.
