Brother PR680W review
The machine that turns embroidery into a thing that can invoice - and, unusually for this tier, one you can actually buy online.

The short answer
Six needles, 12 x 8 in, 1,000 spm and cap frames. The needles are what you are paying for.
Brother publishes a six-needle system, a 12 x 8 in maximum embroidery area, speed up to 1,000 stitches per minute, cap frame capability, a 10.1 in high-definition display and wireless design transfer.
The field is 96 square inches - six times a 4 x 4 in machine. But the reason to buy it is that six threads are loaded, so a six-color design runs without you.
What the six needles are actually worth
On a single-needle machine, every color change is a manual re-thread: cut, re-thread the tension path and take-up lever, thread the needle, test. Call it two minutes if nothing goes wrong.

Single-needle, 650 spm, 12,000 stitches: about 18.5 minutes of stitching plus five thread changes at two minutes each. That is 10 minutes per shirt of your hands, and 3 hours 20 minutes across twenty shirts.
PR680W, 1,000 spm: about 12 minutes of stitching, zero thread changes. Your involvement is hooping and unhooping.
The 35% speed advantage is real and it is the smaller half of the story.
Cap frame capability, which almost nothing else here has
Brother lists cap frame capability on this machine and on the PR1055X. No single-needle machine on this site has it. A structured cap front curves in two directions and will not sit flat in a standard hoop; a cap frame wraps it around a drum instead.
If caps are part of your offer this is not a preference, it is the requirement. Note that the frame is a separate purchase.
The 10.1 inch screen is not a luxury at this tier
Brother’s best single-needle machines have 3.7 in screens. This has 10.1 in. That difference is trivial if you prepare every design in software on a computer, and it is the difference between possible and not if you position, resize and combine designs at the machine - which at production volume you will.
What it does not do
It does not sew. Nothing in the multi-needle tier does. If you hem, patch or finish anything, budget for a separate sewing machine as well.
It is also a commercial footprint, not a domestic one. Measure the space including the clearance the carriage needs to travel the full 12 inches - the working envelope is wider than the machine looks.
The thing worth saying about availability
The PR680W was verified as a live Amazon listing during our September 2026 research. That is worth stating because the equivalent premium tier on the quilting side of this site - true longarms - is authorized-dealer only and cannot be bought online at all, at any price, by anyone.
On the embroidery side, the high-AOV machines are genuinely purchasable. On the quilting side they are not. That asymmetry is real and we cover it honestly on the longarm cost page.
Who it is not for
Anyone whose designs are one or two colors - needles solve color changes, and if you do not have color changes they solve nothing. Anyone who needs one machine to do everything. Anyone whose volume is a few pieces a month, where a single-needle 6 x 10 in machine like the NQ1600E does the same work for a fraction of the money.

Multi-needle tier
Four needles and a 240 x 200 mm field in a machine that is physically smaller and lighter than the six-needle alternatives. The four-color ceiling is the whole decision.
Skip it if: Your typical design has more than four colors. On a four-needle machine a five-color design still stops and waits for you, which removes most of the reason to buy one.
