The short answer

For most people searching this: the Brother SE2000. For the strongest machine Brother makes: the PR680W.

Those are two different questions and it is worth separating them. The SE2000 publishes a 5 x 7 in field, 650 spm embroidery, 850 spm sewing, 241 stitches, a 3.7 in color touchscreen and wireless transfer. It is the machine that fits the largest number of people typing “Brother embroidery machine” into a search box.

The PR680W is objectively the better machine - six needles, 12 x 8 in, 1,000 spm, cap frame capability - and it wins our cross-brand roundup outright. It is also several times the money and does not sew. If you are charging for the work, buy that one instead of anything below.

The four Brother tiers, and what actually separates them

Brother sells its embroidery machines under four naming families - SE, PE, NQ and PR - and the families do not map cleanly onto capability. What separates the machines is two published numbers: the maximum embroidery area, and the number of needles.

Tier 1: 4 x 4 in - the SE600 and SE700

Sixteen square inches. Both machines sew as well as embroider, both publish a 6.4 in work area, and both are a hardware ceiling rather than a hoop you can upgrade past. This tier monograms, does a left-chest logo and does a pocket motif. It does not do the back of anything.

Tier 2: 5 x 7 in - the PE800, PE900, SE1900 and SE2000

Thirty-five square inches, and the tier most Brother buyers should land on. The PE800 and PE900 are embroidery-only; the SE1900 and SE2000 also sew. Within the tier the field is identical on all four - what varies is the screen, the wireless transfer, and whether Brother publishes a speed.

Tier 3: 6 x 10 in - the NQ1600E and NQ3550W

Sixty square inches. The NQ1600E is embroidery-only at a published 850 spm; the NQ3550W sews too, with 291 stitches and 8.3 in of usable width. This is where a long-axis design - a name across a back, a towel border, a sleeve run - stops needing to be split.

Tier 4: multi-needle - the PR680W and PR1055X

Ninety-six and 112 square inches, six and ten needles, both at 1,000 spm, both with cap frame capability. The field is bigger, but the field is not the point: the point is that six or ten threads are already loaded, so a multi-color design runs without you standing at the machine.

And the outlier: the Luminaire XP3

Brother publishes a 10 5/8 x 16 in field for its flagship - 170 square inches, the largest single-needle field in the range. It is also a machine whose product page publishes neither a speed nor a work area, which at flagship money is a genuine problem for anyone trying to compare it.

The first step up is worth more than the two after it

4 x 4 in to 5 x 7 in: 16 to 35 sq in, +119%.
5 x 7 in to 6 x 10 in: 35 to 60 sq in, +71%.
6 x 10 in to 12 x 8 in: 60 to 96 sq in, +60%.

Each step buys proportionally less than the one before it. If you can afford exactly one upgrade in the Brother range, make it the jump out of 4 x 4 in - it is the largest single gain anywhere in the lineup and it is not close.

Six Brother machines have no published speed

This is the most useful thing on the page and it is not something Brother advertises. Maximum embroidery speed decides how long a 20,000-stitch design takes. Brother publishes it for the SE2000 (650 spm), PE900 (650 spm), NQ1600E (850 spm), PR680W (1,000 spm) and PR1055X (1,000 spm).

It publishes nothing at all for the SE600, SE700, SE1900, PE800, NQ3550W or the Luminaire XP3. Six machines, including the 6 x 10 in combination machine and the flagship. Any listing that gives you a stitches-per-minute figure for those six did not get it from Brother.

Brother against the rest of the market

Two honest points in Brother’s favor and one against.

For: the United States accessory ecosystem is the deepest of any brand here. Hoops, magnetic frames with published compatibility lists, design files in Brother formats, and a dealer network that actually services machines. If you own Brother hoops already, staying inside the range keeps them.

For: the range is genuinely continuous. You can move from 4 x 4 in to 5 x 7 in to 6 x 10 in to six needles without ever leaving the brand or relearning an interface.

Against: Brother documents its own machines inconsistently. It publishes the SE-series work area width-first and the PQ-series needle-to-arm space height-first, with no label saying which is which, and it omits the speed figure on six models. bernette publishes every number for the 79 in both unit systems - which is why that machine, not a Brother, wins our combination machine roundup.

Skip this

Skip the SE600 and SE700 unless monograms are genuinely the whole plan

They are well-made machines and the cheapest honest way into machine embroidery. But 16 square inches is fixed in hardware, and the buyers who keep embroidering replace them fast. Buying the 5 x 7 in tier once costs less than buying the 4 x 4 in tier and then the 5 x 7 in tier.

The exception is real: if you only ever monogram, the ceiling never binds and there is no sense paying for field you will not use.

Which Brother, in one line each

Upgrading and it is your only machine: the SE2000. Published speeds, wireless, 5 x 7 in.

Upgrading and you already own a sewing machine: the PE800 for value, the PE900 if you want the numbers published.

You need the long axis: the NQ1600E if you do not need to sew, the NQ3550W if you do.

You are charging for it: the PR680W. Ten needles on the PR1055X only pay for themselves if your designs actually use ten colors.

Before committing, check your largest real design against the Brother hoop size chart. It lists every machine above by its published field, and the field is the one number no accessory can change.

The arithmetic

5 x 7 in is 35 sq in of design area. 4 x 4 in is 16. The upgrade more than doubles what you can stitch in one hooping.

35 / 16 = 2.19. Everything that previously needed splitting across two hoopings - a full back design, a large name drop, most jacket work - becomes a single hooping. The time saved is not the stitching. It is the re-hooping and the alignment.

6 x 10 in is 60 sq in. 5 x 7 in is 35. That is 71% more design area for one step up.

60 / 35 = 1.71. The jump matters most for anything with a long axis - a name across a back, a border on a towel, a quilt label - because a 10 in dimension removes the split that a 7 in field forces.

The arithmetic

Six needles do not make it six times faster. They remove the re-thread, which on a six-color design is where the time actually goes.

A six-color left-chest logo on a single-needle machine is five thread changes. Call each one two minutes of unthreading, re-threading and re-tensioning: that is 10 minutes of hands-on time per garment, and you have to be standing there for all of it. On the PR680W the same design runs start to finish without you. At 1,000 spm against 650 spm the stitching itself is also about 35% quicker, but the stitching was never the bottleneck.

The arithmetic

Moving from a 4 x 4 in hoop to a 5 x 7 in hoop is not 75% more room. It is 119% more.

4 x 4 = 16 sq in. 5 x 7 = 35 sq in. 35 / 16 = 2.19, so the 5 x 7 in field is 119% larger. That is the biggest proportional jump anywhere in the Brother range, and it is why the SE700 is the machine most first buyers replace.

For most home buyers, the SE2000: a 5 x 7 in field, 650 spm embroidery and 850 spm sewing both published, 241 stitches, wireless transfer and a 3.7 in color touchscreen. The strongest machine Brother makes is the six-needle PR680W, but it does not sew and it is a business purchase.

What is the difference between Brother SE, PE, NQ and PR machines?

SE machines sew and embroider. PE machines embroider only. NQ machines are the 6 x 10 in tier, in both embroidery-only (NQ1600E) and combination (NQ3550W) form. PR machines are the multi-needle commercial range. The field size and needle count matter more than the letters.

What is the largest embroidery field on a Brother machine?

10 5/8 x 16 in on the Luminaire XP3 - 170 square inches, and the largest single-needle field Brother publishes. Among the multi-needle machines the PR1055X publishes 14 x 8 in, which is 112 square inches.

How fast do Brother embroidery machines stitch?

Where Brother publishes the figure: 650 spm on the SE2000 and PE900, 850 spm on the NQ1600E, and 1,000 spm on the PR680W and PR1055X. Brother publishes no maximum embroidery speed at all for the SE600, SE700, SE1900, PE800, NQ3550W or the Luminaire XP3.

Can you use a bigger hoop on a Brother embroidery machine?

Only up to the machine’s published field. The field is how far the carriage travels, so a larger hoop cannot be stitched to its edges even if it physically mounts. A 4 x 4 in machine stays a 4 x 4 in machine whatever hoop you buy.

Are Brother embroidery machines better than Janome?

Different strengths. Brother has by far the deeper US accessory and design ecosystem and a continuous upgrade path. Janome publishes its specifications more consistently - the MB-4S field is given unambiguously in millimeters with a speed figure attached. The full head to head is on the Janome vs Brother page.
