Brother embroidery machine hoop sizes
Brother spans 16 to 170 square inches across nine machines, and its hoops do not carry across generations. Both facts are published; here they are in one place.
Heads up: the buy links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through one we earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we rank things in - here is how we keep those separate.
Brother machines on this site span four field sizes: 4 x 4 in (SE600, SE700), 5 x 7 in (PE800, PE900, SE1900, SE2000), 6 x 10 in (NQ1600E, NQ3550W) and the multi-needle and flagship fields above that. Hoop mounts are model-specific and do not transfer across generations, and Brother publishes the compatible machine list for each hoop.

The two Brother hoops whose compatibility we verified
Brother publishes a compatible-machine list on each accessory page. We read two of them on 1 September 2026 and they are worth quoting in full, because the lists do not overlap at all:
| Hoop | Size | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| SAMF180N magnetic frame | 4 x 7 in, works within a 5 x 7 in field | PE800, PE900, SE1900, SE2000, NS1250E and NS2850D series |
| SA444 standard hoop | 5 x 7 in | Designio DZ820E, Innov-is 1000, Innov-is NS1150E, PE700, PE700II, PE750D, PE770, PE780D, Simplicity SB7900E |
Read that table twice
The SA444 is a 5 x 7 in hoop. The SAMF180N works within a 5 x 7 in field. Neither list contains a single machine that appears in the other.
Same brand, same field size, completely disjoint compatibility. The SA444 fits the PE700 and PE770 generation; the magnetic frame fits the PE800, PE900 and SE2000 generation.
If you take one thing from this page: matching the hoop size to your field is not enough. The mount is a physical bracket and it either matches your carriage or it does not.
Cross-checking compatibility properly
The safest signal is when both pages name each other. Brother’s SE2000 page states the machine takes a 4 x 7 in Brother magnetic hoop, and the SAMF180N page lists the SE2000 among its compatible machines. Two independent confirmations from the manufacturer.
Where only one side names the other, verify before buying. Where neither does, treat it as unverified rather than as probably fine.
Skip this
Do not assume a hoop fits because the size matches
The two lists above are the proof. Both hoops cover a 5 x 7 in area, from the same manufacturer, and they fit entirely different machines.
Third-party hoops are a bigger risk again, because many sellers list a size and no machine list at all. A frame that almost fits does not mount, and there is no adapter.
What Brother publishes well, and what it does not
Well: hoop compatibility lists, in full, on the accessory page. Field sizes on every machine. Design counts.
Not well: maximum embroidery speed, which is missing from the SE600, SE700, SE1900, PE800, NQ3550W and Luminaire XP3 pages. Work area, missing from several. And the NQ1600E page gives two different design counts - 138 in the specification table and 198 in the description.
We record all of that rather than smoothing it over, because a chart that quietly picks one of two contradictory numbers is a chart you cannot check. The full cross-brand picture is on the hoop size chart.

Brother
Brother SAMF180N 4 x 7 in Magnetic Frame
Accessory
Six magnets instead of a screw-tightened outer ring. It is the accessory that fixes hoop burn on a 5 x 7 in machine, and Brother publishes the compatibility list rather than leaving you to guess.
Skip it if: Your machine is not on Brother's list. The frame is model-specific and a near-miss does not mount.

Brother
Brother SA444 5 x 7 in Embroidery Hoop
Accessory
The standard 5 x 7 in replacement hoop for the older Brother embroidery-only machines. Worth owning a second one purely so one hooping can be stitching while you prepare the next.
Skip it if: Your machine is not on the list. The SA444 fits a specific set of models and hoop mounts are not interchangeable across generations.

Brother
Brother SE2000
Upper combo tier
The combo machine to buy if you are upgrading rather than starting: 5 x 7 in of field, 241 sewing stitches, a 3.7 in color screen, wireless design transfer, and published speed figures, which most of Brother's range does not have.
Skip it if: You are going to want 6 x 10 in within a year. Buy the field you will need, not the field you need today.

How this was ranked
Machines we claim to have tested: none. Everyone in this category says they tested twenty. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: built the candidate set from what Amazon actually stocks, read the published specification off each manufacturer’s own page, normalized every measurement into the same units and the same order, did the arithmetic on what each step up buys, and left every figure the maker does not publish visibly blank rather than filling it in. Every number on this page links to where it was published, so you can check the work in about five minutes.

Questions people actually ask
Frequently asked
What are Brother embroidery machine hoop sizes?
Across the Brother machines on this site: 4 x 4 in (SE600, SE700), 5 x 7 in (PE800, PE900, SE1900, SE2000), 6 x 10 in (NQ1600E, NQ3550W), 12 x 8 in (PR680W), 14 x 8 in (PR1055X) and 10 5/8 x 16 in (Luminaire XP3).
Do Brother hoops fit across different Brother machines?
Not reliably. The SA444 5 x 7 in hoop fits the PE700 and PE770 generation; the SAMF180N 4 x 7 in magnetic frame fits the PE800, PE900 and SE2000 generation. The two published lists do not share a single machine.
What hoop does the Brother SE2000 take?
Brother publishes a 5 x 7 in field and states on the machine page that it takes the 4 x 7 in Brother magnetic hoop. The SAMF180N page independently lists the SE2000, so that fit is confirmed from both directions.
What is the largest Brother embroidery field?
The Luminaire XP3 at a published 10 5/8 x 16 in - 170 square inches. Among multi-needle machines, the PR1055X at 14 x 8 in, which is 112.
Why do some Brother pages not list an embroidery speed?
Brother simply does not publish one for several machines: the SE600, SE700, SE1900, PE800, NQ3550W and Luminaire XP3. We leave those cells blank rather than estimating, and note which manufacturer left them blank.
